After arriving at our campground in Amana, Iowa, we took a ride to Dyersville to visit the Field of Dreams movie site. It was one of the things we knew we wanted to see while in that area of Iowa.
It was a cool, cloudy day, but the field looked great. The only difference from the movie was that the early June corn was only about two feet high. So disappearing into the cornfield was not an option. We were allowed to walk on the field. In fact, Dads were throwing batting practice to their sons and daughters. The small bleachers along both sidelines we there, and in your mind, you could picture all the scenes from the 1989 movie.
We also went into the gift shop, then took a guided tour of the house, which still had some of the original appliances, furniture, and artifacts from the movie.
Far out beyond left field, a stadium with a seating capacity of about 8,000 has been built. A major league game was held there in August 2021, with Kevin Costner leading the White Sox and Yankees onto the field from the cornfield. Watch it here
After leaving the movie site, we went into the town to visit the If You Build It Exhibit. It’s owned by the actor who played Ray’s (Kevin Costner) father in the movie, and provided many interesting facts about the making of the movie. Right next door was another small museum called The Baseball Hall of Dreams. This contains amazingly old baseball equipment and provides a history of the game and its great players.
If you ever find yourself in Iowa, and love baseball and the Field of Dreams movie, this will be a day that you’ll really enjoy. As stated in the movie, “People will come”. We’re glad we did!
