Making our Way to TX

November 15, 2023

On our treck from NC to Texas we had a few stops along the way. Our first stop was an overnight in Tennessee where it was decorated for Halloween. We then made our way to Red Bay, AL where we again made sure “Rocket” (our RV) was parked for the week while Sian flew out to Massachusetts for work. Sian was able to squeeze a great Italian dinner on Cape Cod with her Aunt and Uncle It was great for Sian to see the rest of her TECH colleagues in person. After a quick two night stay it was back to Alabama. While away Richard and Snickers held down the fort getting a few upgrades. We added a drawer under the dining room table for office supplies, added hardware to the compartment under the washer and dryer for easier access to unused storage compartment, and had a few small pillows made.

Our next stop was an overnight in Mississippi as a stop over to a week stay in Louisiana at a great Sun Outdoors RV Resort in Ponchatoula, LA. It had great amenities and was a little less than an hour north of New Orleans.

Couldn’t resist getting a beignet at Cafe Du Monde.

Sian thinks Disney’s French Quarter Beignets are an even better. Some day we will have to go to France to compare for the authentic version of a beignet.

Heading north, from the gulf of Texas, we stayed overnight at a unique Harvest Host location, John Schneider’s Studio. For those that are old enough you may know John Schneider form the Dukes of Hazard TV Show. The location is along our route and decide to check it out. It was quirky with memorabilia from the show along with numerous buildings. Great whole people operate the facilities. And Snickers even met Red Dog.

We made our way from Louisiana to Texas. We settled into Camp Margaritaville, Crystal Beach on the gulf coast. In the middle of November and it was cold. This is a relatively new RV resort and when we were there two weeks before Thanksgiving it was relatively sparse. We do think in warmer weather it would have has a more fun and relaxing vibe. We had to take a ferry ride from Crystal Beach to Galveston, TX to head to the local Walmart and the grocery store. Although there was a small grocery store local is had limited products. All in all the ferry added 15 minutes to our trip and was free, so it was not that much of an inconvenience, during our visit.

That next weekend we headed off on Friday for an overnight at a Harvest Host location, Messina Hof Winery, located in Bryan, Texas, Unfortunately, reservations were full for their dining but was able to relax in their Tasting Room. We enjoyed a flight of their wine, which was absolutely divine (pun intended)

Waco Bound. Over Thanksgivings we stayed at Camp Fimfo in Waco, TX We found out the meaning of FIMFO – Fun Is More Fun Outside. There is some trivia for you. Again it was colder than normal and the pool was closed which as a bummer. We instead headed to Magnolia to see the Christmas display and drove around to see the Christmas lights. Sian was a little disappointed as it appeared there was a lot less inventory and the Christmas decor at Magnolia was definitely understated (it was obvious that was what they were going for). Don’t get me wrong it was very tastefully done.
